Newberry Long-Term Fellowships

Researchers with long-term fellowships spend four to nine months immersed in the Newberry collection and in our community of learning. While pursuing significant works of scholarship, they make discoveries, present works in progress, and take their projects to the next level.
General Long-Term Fellowships
The Mellon Foundation Fellowship
Supporting scholarship in any field relevant to the Newberry’s collection.
Stipend: $5,000/month
Length: 4 - 9 months
Who can apply: Having a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) by the application deadline is required.

Richard H. Brown/William Lloyd Barber Fellowships
Supporting scholarship in any area of American history that is relevant to the Newberry’s collection.
Stipend: $5,000/month
Length: 4 - 9 months

The Evelyn Dunbar and Ruth Dunbar Davee Fellowship
Supporting scholarship in music related to the Newberry's collection.

Lloyd Lewis Fellowships in American History
Supporting scholarship in any area of American history that is relevant to the Newberry’s collection.

The Audrey Lumsden-Kouvel Fellowship
Supporting scholarship related to history and literature in the Late Medieval and Early Modern period. Preference will be given to projects focusing on the colonial Americas and Romance cultures, especially translations and topics focusing on Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin American Studies.
Stipend: $5,000/month

The Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women
Supporting a pre-tenure woman whose work points to a future of scholarly productivity and who would benefit significantly from being in residence at the Newberry. Preference will be given to projects concerned with the study of women.

Consortium Fellowships
Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies (NCAIS) Faculty Fellowship
This fellowship is intended to support faculty members from institutions participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Preference will be given to scholars at an early stage of their career who are working on a project in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Fellows can be in continuous or intermittent residence at the Newberry or complete their fellowships entirely offsite, conducting research in existing digital collections or the collections of other institutions. Fellowship recipients are required to be in residence at the Newberry the week of the annual NCAIS Graduate Student Conference, which is held on the second weekend of February each year. The fellow is expected to attend and engage with students as a mentor at the conference, as well as work with McNickle Center Staff prior to the conference to shape the event's keynote address.
Stipend: $5,000/month

The Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel Joint Fellowship
This fellowship adds one additional month of support to a long-term fellowship for research at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The proposed project must describe the materials to be consulted at both the Newberry Library and the Herzog August Bibliothek. The recipient should plan to visit the libraries sequentially to ensure continuity of research.
Stipend: 1,800 Euro/month from the Herzog August Bibliothek, plus up to 650 Euro for travel expenses.
Length: 1 additional month added to an awarded Newberry fellowship listed above + 1 month at the Herzog August Bibliothek
Who can apply: Anyone with a PhD by the application deadline.
