Global Fellowship Scheme

Image

Applicants to the Global Fellowship Scheme should be recognised as significant scholars in their field or emerging leaders who have made a contribution to original research that extends the frontier of knowledge. Global Fellows are expected to hold an established academic position.

Please see the the 2024-25 Global Fellowship flyer (PDF) for more information.

Conditions

Global Fellows will be expected to engage virtually with students and colleagues throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, and visit St Andrews between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2025. Applicants not available during this time should consider applying in a future round of the scheme.

The University provides all Global Fellows with:

  • a stipend of £1000 per 28 day visit (or per day sum for shorter visits)
  • self-catered accommodation in a one bedroom apartment or equivalent
  • return airfare in economy class, booked by the University
  • airport transfers to and from St Andrews
  • access to University IT and library facilities

The University cannot offer a buy-out for teaching at the home institution. Candidates will usually be on a sabbatical or research leave, or indicate a time when they are free during the year.

Expectations

Global Fellows are expected to contribute to the scholarly community at St Andrews. This includes interacting with a wide range of staff and students, and participating in the scholarly activities of Academic Schools, Centres and Institutes, both virtually and in person throughout the 2024-2025 academic year.

Global Fellows will normally give a research seminar, postgraduate lecture, undergraduate training activity or similar during their visit.

For applicants who would be otherwise unable to visit in person due to caring commitments or other similar responsibilities, a fully virtual Global Fellowship may be considered. A shorter visit may also be arranged to support those unable to visit for an extended period.

Eligibility

Candidates must have completed a PhD degree or equivalent before submitting an application to the scheme.

Candidates must also be based outside the UK and be employed in a university, research institute or similar.
