Mellon Fellowships | Garden and Landscape Studies

Interested in pursuing research on landscape histories with a focus on those narratives that are forgotten or neglected?  Researching questions of democracy, the public realm, and place histories? Consider applying for Mellon Fellowships at Dumbarton Oaks. 

By cultivating a community of scholars engaged in landscape histories defined broadly, we are collectively contributing to the development and expansion of critical questions in the histories of place and communities. The Mellon Fellowships expand opportunities to study histories of landscapes through the lenses of democracy, race, identity, and difference. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a demonstrated capacity for cross-disciplinary scholarship and/or teaching. Preference will be given to candidates with final degrees, such as a PhD or MLA.  
 
Mellon Fellowships are normally awarded for the academic year. During this time, recipients are expected to be in residence at Dumbarton Oaks and to devote full time to their study projects without undertaking any other major activities. Awards may also be made for a single term. 

Fellowships are prorated for appointments shorter than the full academic year. Dumbarton Oaks anticipates that sabbatical salary or funds from other sources may supplement awards, particularly for fellows. Fellows may hold other grants with the knowledge and permission of both the grantors and Dumbarton Oaks and provided the terms do not conflict with the commitment of residence at Dumbarton Oaks.
