Resident Scholar Fellowships at Santa Fe School for Advanced Research (SAR)
Projects proposed should require nine months to bring to substantial completion, although applications from faculty for semester-long fellowships (4.5 months) will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the availability of fellow apartments. Campus apartments are provided for each fellow but separate offices are unavailable. Fellows must be in residence for at least 90% of their appointments. Senior fellows are expected to informally mentor junior fellows.
Reviewers will evaluate applications from the perspective of the approaches and fields that applicants are seeking to advance. Because SAR fellowships include the broadest expanse of the humanities and social sciences, with a preference for empirically grounded work, reviewers will not privilege their personal scholarly preferences (whether disciplinary, subfield, method, theory, or other professional lens) but instead will endeavor to evaluate the proposal from the perspective that each applicant takes.
Applications will be evaluated on two overall criteria:
(1) Does the proposed project significantly advance the area of scholarship on which it is focused?
(2) Does the application and any prior published work by the applicant demonstrate an ability to write in a publicly accessible manner for non-specialists?
Stipends for senior scholars are $70,000 for nine month fellowships and $35,000 for 4.5 months. Stipends for junior scholars are $50,000 for nine months. Due to ongoing construction on campus, offices separate from fellows residences will not be available.
Applications accepted through the first Monday in November to be considered for a residency beginning September 1 the following year. Awards are announced annually in March.
Resident Scholars approach research from the perspective of archaeology, anthropology or from related fields such as history or sociology.
