University of Illinois at Chicago Library

The University Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago supports the teaching, research and service mission of the University.

There are five Library locations:

• Richard J. Daley Library
• Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago
• Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria
• Crawford Library of the Health Sciences-Rockford
• Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana

The Library serves an urban campus of more than 29,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff as well as the Chicago metropolitan area and the State of Illinois.

The Library has 2.3 million volumes and 61,000 journal titles, most of which are available online.

The Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago evolved from a reading room within the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago in the late 1800s to a freestanding facility at its current location dedicated in 1974. The collection includes serial titles, monographs, and audio visual materials on medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacology, and other health-related professions.  Its special collections include the History of Nursing and Pharmacy Collection, the Kiefer Collection (urology), the Percival Bailey Library (neurology) and the Nyhus Collection (gastroenterology). There are health sciences libraries in Peoria, Rockford and Urbana serving the UIC health sciences colleges in those cities.

The Richard J. Daley Library collections cover the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and engineering. Special Collections and University Archives houses rare books and printed materials, manuscript collections, and university archives, specializing in the history of Chicago.
