C4E Visiting Faculty Fellowship (Ethics of AI Lab)

The interdisciplinary Ethics of AI Lab at the Centre for Ethics, University of Toronto welcomes applications from faculty at other universities and research institutes who wish to spend all or part of an academic year as a Visiting Professor to conduct research related to the Lab’s mission to foster academic and public dialogue about Ethics of AI in Context—the normative dimensions of the global AI revolution and related phenomena in all aspects of private, public, and political life.

All applications related to the Lab’s mission, regardless of discipline or field of study, are welcome. Disciplinary affiliations of participants in Lab projects and events have included business, cognitive science, computer science, criminology, engineering, information studies, law, literary studies, media studies, medicine, philosophy, political science, and psychology.

For further information about the Lab’s activities, please consult its website or online journal.

Housed at the Centre for Ethics, in the heart of the University of Toronto’s downtown (St. George) campus, the Lab provides Visiting Professors with office and event space, printing and library privileges, and access to the university’s electronic resources. (Unfortunately, we cannot provide salary replacement or administrative support.) Visiting Professors contribute to the Centre’s intellectual life through participation in seminars, workshops, and other Centre events.

To apply, please send (1) a cover letter including a statement of your proposed research and source of funding and (2) a current CV to ethics@utoronto.ca. Please submit your application materials in PDF format as one file, using the naming convention “LastnameFirstname_2020_AI.”

Applications for yearlong stays are preferred; other applications should specify the period of the proposed visit, e.g., summer (May-August), fall (September-December) or spring term (January-April). Please note that Visiting Professorships are intended for individuals holding full-time faculty positions at universities and research institutes who are on leave (e.g., sabbatical) and intend to return to their position at the end of their stay at the Centre for Ethics.
