Center for Chinese Studies Visiting Scholar Program

Since the 1950s, scholars in the Chinese Studies field from throughout the world have been in residence as Visiting Scholars at the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS). These honorary affiliates are chosen on the strength of their proposed research projects and the ability of the faculty or library resources on the Berkeley campus to meet their research needs. CCS scholars conduct comparative and area studies research in their field of study on the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora in other countries. We welcome applicants who wish to conduct independent or collaborative research (with prior approval from a faculty sponsor) on a research project of their choosing. CCS scholars generally remain at the Center for six months to two years and also participate regularly in the Center's scholarly life and academic programs. Scholars are granted basic access to the university library system, limited photocopy and mailing privileges, and shared office space (if available). For a full list of privileges, program prerequisites, and application instructions, please visit the Prospective Scholar’s page.
