The Historische Kolleg will award up to 3 full-year Advanced Fellowships in the 47th Kolleg year (1 October 2026 – 30 September 2027)

Advanced Fellowships are aimed at scholars in all historical disciplines who are employed at universities or non-university research institutions and have demonstrated outstanding research achievements. They are intended to facilitate completion of a major academic monograph.

Fellowship at the Historische Kolleg

Advanced Fellows spend a full year at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich (October to September). Fellows are provided with office space in the Kaulbach Villa and being resident in Munich is compulsory. The staff of the Kolleg can assist fellows in securing accommodation in the city. Fellows are expected to complete their research project and publish the results within a reasonable period of time.

The fellows are further expected to give a public lecture during their fellowship year. This lecture will also be recorded on a separate date for online publication in the media centre of the Kolleg and with L.I.S.A., the science portal of the Gerda Henkel Foundation. As a rule, fellows also organise a colloquium, the proceedings of which are published in the “Schriften des Historischen Kollegs – Kolloquien.”

Benefits

German fellows are expected to take a leave of absence from their university or research institution for the Kolleg year with full pay. The Kolleg will cover the costs of their replacement at the W2 salary scale. Funding for the fellowships is currently provided by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the C.H. Beck Kulturstiftung, the Free State of Bavaria and the Käte Hamburger Research Centre ‘Dis:connectivity in Processes of Globalisation’, among others. The fellowship of the Käte Hamburger Research Centre ‘Dis:connectivity in Processes of Globalisation’ is awarded specifically for research in global history.

To promote a healthy work-life balance, the Historisches Kolleg can also provide support in securing a place at a day-care centre in the immediate vicinity.
