NATO Defense College Research Fellowships

The NATO Defense College currently offers eight fellowships each year in the field of defence and security policy research related to NATO and its Partners. The objective is to promote research and policy analysis in areas of particular interest to the NATO Member States, as well as to countries that are part of the Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) and Other Military Cooperation (OMC) / Partners Across the Globe (PAG) frameworks. Since the Programme’s inception in 1993, the NDC has awarded more than 120 fellowships.

NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellowship Programme

The NATO Defense College (NDC) is pleased to announce a research opportunity for citizens of NATO member states: the NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellowship programme, named after the College's founder, General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The programme began in 2015; each year the NDC Research Division selects - on a competitive basis - three NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellows:

  • One Senior NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellow (for 5 months);
  • One NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellow (3 months);
  • One NDC Eisenhower PhD Candidate Fellow (3 months).

Each fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel and living expenses while conducting research at the NDC (please refer to the Terms and Conditions explaining the differences between Fellowships).

Applicants are invited to submit proposals reflecting the priorities and challenges for the Alliance as outlined in the 2010 Strategic Concept and Final Declarations issued at the 2014, 2016 and 2018 NATO Summits, by completing and forwarding the Application Form to the NDC Research Division.

Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowships

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from PfP countries. Each fellowship lasts five months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of PfP countries, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals in the area of NATO and Euro-Atlantic security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division.

Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowships

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from MD countries. Each fellowship lasts five months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of partner countries in the Mediterranean Dialogue, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals relating to NATO and Mediterranean security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division.

Other Military Cooperation (OMC) / Partners Across the Globe (PAG)

One fellowship is made available each year for applicants from OMC / PAG countries. This fellowship lasts five months and the fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of Partner countries, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals relating to NATO and Global Security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division.

Selection Procedure

The NDC Research Fellowship Selection Committee meets in October each year, to review all the applications received. Candidates may be contacted by the NDC Research Division for further clarification regarding their applications before that date, but applicants should be aware that a final decision on their application will be made only when the Committee concludes the selection process (by 30 October).

The Committee may select up to eight candidates for the NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellowship in the following calendar year:

  • two candidates from PfP countries,
  • two from MD countries,
  • one from OMC/PAG countries,
  • three from NATO countries

Selected candidates will be notified in writing immediately thereafter and they will receive the latest version of the NDC Fellows’ Manual to prepare for their stay at the College in Rome. Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates selected for the Fellowships will be contacted.

Note: Research proposals unrelated to NATO/incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration.
