Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science

The Santa Fe Institute—a private, not-for-profit research and education facility—has an opening for a full-time postdoc in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. This position is funded by an NSF AI Institute planning project entitled “Foundations of Intelligence in Natural and Artificial Systems”.  As the title implies, the project focuses on broad interdisciplinary studies of intelligence in nature and in machines.

The postdoc position involves (1) assisting the PIs, Drs. Melanie Mitchell and Melanie Moses, and other project participants in planning, participating in, and writing reports on several workshops related to the overall topic; (2) collaborating with the PIs and other participants on AI and cognitive science research related to the project; and (3) participating in education and outreach efforts related to the project. The postdoc will also have ample time to work on and publish research projects of their own devising.

The start date for the position is flexible, but with a rough target of January 2021.   Depending on circumstances at the time, the postdoc may begin the position remotely rather than in-person.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. (by the start date) in an area related to AI or cognitive science and should have broad interests in these fields. The position will last up to two years, subject to performance and available funding.

All SFI postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to interact and collaborate with members of the larger SFI community and to develop their own research projects. The annual salary for the position will be $60,000 with full employee benefits including health insurance, paid time off, and modest relocation support. Additional resources are available to assist with travel and other research needs.

To apply, please send an email containing your CV and a 1-page research statement to  employ@santafe.edu with "AI postdoc" in the subject line. Please include names and contact information of three references. You may also email questions to Dr. Mitchell at mm@santafe.edu.  No telephone calls, please.   Applications will be considered as they are received,  but applications must be received no later than November 1, 2020.

U.S. citizenship is not a requirement, but you should be eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship or a U.S. permanent resident.

The Santa Fe Institute is an equal opportunity employer.  Women and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
