PWIAS Catalyst Collaboration Fund

As part of the Institute’s focus on inter- and trans-disciplinary coordinated efforts to address the climate and nature emergency, we invite faculty at UBCV and UBCO and their associates to submit applications for the PWIAS Catalyst Collaboration Fund.

The available funds ($180,000) will support 2 project streams for up to $10,000 per project in 2 funding cycles. 

Catalyst Collaboration Fund Stream 1 – Seed or match funding for research projects related to climate and nature emergency.

Catalyst Collaboration Fund Stream 2 – Events focused on scholarly, artistic and research collaborations (e.g. academic roundtables and community engagement events) and knowledge translation and mobilization (e.g. videos, resources, open-access courses, larger public-facing events) related to the climate & nature emergency. 

Selection Criteria

Catalyst Collaboration Fund Stream 1 – Seed or match funding for research projects related to climate and nature emergency.

Catalyst Collaboration Fund Stream 2 – Events focused on scholarly, artistic and research collaborations (e.g. academic roundtables and community engagement events) and knowledge translation and mobilization (e.g. videos, resources, open-access courses, larger public-facing events) related to the climate and nature emergency.  

Both funding streams – Applications must demonstrate how they meet the below criteria:

• Interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary projects in areas directly or indirectly related to Climate and Nature Emergency.
• Projects must meet and demonstrate at least 3 out of the 4 principles listed below.
• Projects must involve collaborations across disciplines, with students, organizations and or communities.

4 Guiding Principles of the Wall Catalyst Program:

Ethical Collaborations: Transdisciplinary, intergenerational, and community relationship building grounded on trust, respect, reciprocity, consent, and accountability.

Intellectual Depth: (self)Critical and relational rigour in moving beyond common patterns of simplistic solutions, paternalistic forms of engagements and ethnocentric ideals of sustainability, justice, and change.

Reparative Redistribution: Allocation of resources prioritising populations most affected by the Climate and Nature Emergency and precarity, and research areas of greatest urgency and impact guided by principles of reparation.

Engagement with the Indigenous Strategic Plan: Deepening understanding of settler responsibilities and supporting the aspirations of Indigenous scholars and communities.

Budget

For both streams applicants will receive a grant up to $10,000 to be used preferably within the 22/23 academic year. There will be the opportunity for a one year extension on the funds with a written request. 

• Activities in BC will be prioritized for funding.
• The funds cannot be taken as salary stipends for faculty.
• We encourage the use of the funds with research and knowledge mobilization involving students and with communities that have been directly affected by climate change and biodiversity loss.
• A project can only be funded once through this program.

Eligibility

• Applicants – PIs are required to hold a faculty position at UBC (including UBCO) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, or Clinical Faculty in either the research or teaching streams.
• Projects should demonstrate inter- or trans-disciplinary coordinated efforts to address the climate and nature emergency.
• Projects should align with at least 3 of the 4 guiding principles of the Wall Catalyst Program. 
• Applicants should be working in partnership with other disciplines, students, organizations,  communities and/or staff.
• A project can only be funded once through this program.

Applications will be adjudicated by an interdisciplinary peer review process and should be written for non-specialists (i.e., avoid technical or field-specific jargon).

Interested applicants should submit:

• A complete application form describing your projects contributions to the thematic area and how the project aligns with the principles of the Catalyst Program.
• A complete and signed Research Project Information Form. 
• If working with an organization or community partner(s) include appropriate Letter(s) of Support.
