Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the History of Socialist Science within the framework of ‘The Socialist Anthropocene in the Visual Arts’, a five-year interdisciplinary research project awarded in the ERC Consolidator Grant competition and funded through a UKRI Frontier Research grant.
About the role
The successful candidate will be required to contribute through individual and collaborative research to discussion of the Socialist Anthropocene. They will participate in regular group meetings and play an active role in biannual research weeks by contributing to the planning and realization of seminars, conferences and other public programmes. They will take advantage of the opportunity provided by the project to undertake individual fieldtrips to conduct their research in relevant archives and collections. They will also join the other members of the SAVA team on annual group field trips to sites of the Socialist Anthropocene. This job is at 50% FTE (18.25 hours per week). The salary is at UCL Grade 7 - £38,308 - £46,155 (pro-rata) per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
About you
The Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Socialist Science will have a specialisation in the history of science under socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union or another global region of the socialist world. Projects based on the history of earth and life sciences, understood to include biology, chemistry, geology, geophysics, agriculture, zoology, botany, ecology and climatology, is likely to be of particular relevance for research into the Socialist Anthropocene. The candidate will hold a PhD in History of Science or a related discipline awarded within the last three years, although career breaks will also be taken into account. They will have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and other equivalent research outputs. They will be expected to demonstrate an openness to interdisciplinary and artistic methodologies, as well as skills in dissemination and communication of research and a willingness to participate fully in public facing events.
