The Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) is looking for a temporary position at the Center for Civil Society Research (Head: Prof. Dr. Swen Hutter) to start as soon as possible, limited to three years, subject to approval by the third-party funding provider, a Research Fellow (m/f/d) - Postdoctoral Researcher (100%) (ID 305) for collaboration in the BMBF/BMI-funded Cluster of Excellence Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalization (MOTRA). During the second funding phase of the WZB Protest Monitoring project, the systematic collection and analysis of protests and radicalization dynamics in Germany will be further advanced. The primary objectives of the advertised position are: (a) to further develop the semi-automated national protest event analysis and the analysis of the existing data spanning the years 1950 to 2024, as well as (b) to establish systematic linkages between protest event data and original surveys and survey experiments. Within this project, the WZB has separately advertised an additional position as a Research Fellow (m/f/d) - Postdoctoral Researcher (100%) in the Department of Migration, Integration, Transnationalization (Head: Prof. Dr. Ruud Koopmans) with a focus on Islamist mobilization structures and ideologies.

The WZB Berlin Social Science Center is a publicly financed research institution that conducts leading edge theory-based and problem-oriented social science research (http://www.wzb.eu/en). At the WZB, around 450 researchers from various disciplines work together with staff members from the research-supporting areas. WZB researchers come from across the globe and work across social science disciplines including sociology, political science, economics, law, and psychology. Job description

Your tasks and duties

  • Collection and analysis of media-based protest data and survey data: Organization, coordination and implementation of data collection
  • Further development and implementation of semi-automated procedures for the selection and coding of protest events
  • Linking protest and survey data (incl. survey experiments)
  • Preparation of scientific publications
  • Collaboration on the project reports
  • Presentation of project results in workshops and conferences
  • Exchange and coordination in the WZB project part
  • Exchange and coordination with the network partners

The possibility of a habilitation or the acquisition of habilitation-equivalent achievements in the field of protest research is given.
 Your qualifications profile

  • Very well completed doctoral degree in political science, sociology or a related social science discipline
  • Very good knowledge of and interest in the scholarly literature on political protest, social movements and radicalization
  • Very good statistical and programming skills (R and/or Python)
  • Very good knowledge of automated text analysis
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Very good knowledge of German and English

Desirable

  • Experience in the automated coding of event data
  • Experience in analyzing survey data (incl. survey experiments)
  • Experience in scientific project work
  • Thematically relevant publications
