German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ Tokyo)

The German Institute for Japanese Studies was founded in 1988 in Tokyo as an interdisciplinary research institution dedicated to investigating modern Japan. Our mission is to enhance knowledge and understanding of Japanese society, economy, politics and culture, as well as Japan’s international relations, by applying and advancing methods and theories from both the humanities and the social sciences. Comparative perspectives as well as multi- and interdisciplinary approaches are central to our research activities. Through our extensive network and by conducting conferences and lectures and offering a visiting scholar program the institute also functions as an intermediary in academic exchange particularly but not exclusively between Germany and Japan. Our expertise is frequently utilized by multipliers and decision-makers in the fields of education, media, politics, and business.

The DIJ Tokyo sees itself as an "on-site" centre for Japanese Studies which is part of an international network. The institute focuses on study and documentation of German-Japanese Relations, promotion of next-generation academics, and cooperation with Japanese institutes and academics.
