Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg (MARKK)

The Museum promotes appreciation for and knowledge about the cultures and arts of the world. It creates spaces for cultural encounter and critical reflection through exhibitions, events, and research. Founded in an era of colonial inequality, the museum today aims to interrogate persisting colonial patterns of thought through collaborations and within an atmosphere of respect, openness and empathy. We want to inspire an idea of global citizenship.

Starting point for our work is our collection. The museum is obliged to its preservation, expansion and critical evaluation. We want to make people aware of the multiple meanings of objects, their beauty and the knowledge conserved in them. We invite our audience to look at objects from a variety of different vantage points, which include the understanding of their context of origin, their historical entanglement, and their importance for a globalized society.
