SCHWARZ FELLOWSHIP FOR RESEARCH ON MUSIC

The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Music supports research that focuses on the cultural history of music in the Mediterranean world broadly defined. The fellowship aims to promote the study of interactions among Western European, Byzantine, Islamic and Jewish cultures from the medieval to the modern period.

Eligibility: Career musicians or researchers, Ph.D. candidates, or Ph.D. holders who received their degree within the last 5 years. Open to all nationalities. For research in the Gennadius Library for the full academic year.

KATHRYN AND PETER YATRAKIS FELLOWSHIP

The Yatrakis Fellowship supports research on topics that require use of the Gennadius Library. Opened in 1926 with the 26,000-volume collection of diplomat and bibliophile Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library houses today 145,000 titles of rare books and bindings, research materials, manuscripts, archives, and works of art that illuminate Hellenism, Greece, and neighboring civilizations from antiquity to modern times. Rare maps of the Mediterranean, early editions of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and a laurel wreath belonging to Lord Byron are just some of the unique items.

COTSEN TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP

DEADLINE: January 15, 2025

The Gennadius Library offers the Cotsen Traveling Fellowship, a short-term grant awarded each year to Ph.D. holders or graduate students pursuing research topics that require the use of the collections of the Gennadius Library.

The grant was established by the Overseers of the Gennadius Library to honor Lloyd E. Cotsen, former Chair of the Overseers and benefactor of the Library.

Eligibility:  Senior scholars (PhD holders) and graduate students of any nationality.

Grants for Post-Doctoral Research and Lecturing

As part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, Fulbright Schuman awards scholarships to European citizens to conduct research and/or lecture in any academic field at an accredited U.S. institution for a period between three months and one academic year (9 months). Applicants must present a letter of affiliation from an accredited university or non-profit research institution and must demonstrate in their Project Statement that their proposed research is relevant to U.S.-EU relations, EU policy, or the EU institutions and to at least two EU Member States.

Wilde-Holland Fellowship

This 1–2 month fellowship is available to a postdoctoral scholar, graduate student, or visiting scholar for research using materials from the Oscar Wilde collection at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. The fellowship, established in 2021, honors the writer and cultural figure Oscar Wilde and his grandson Merlin Holland, a scholar who has dedicated himself to studying and celebrating Wilde’s legacy.

SCIENCE HISTORY INSTITUTE Short-Term Fellowships

These fellowships are open to all scholars and researchers, irrespective of career stage or educational credentials, who plan to work closely with the Institute’s collections on an independent research project. Applicants may be citizens of any country. Short-term fellowship stipends are US$3,000 per month, intended to defray the costs of travel, accommodation, and living expenses in Philadelphia.

SCIENCE HISTORY INSTITUTE Distinguished Fellowships

These four-month fellowships are open to established scholars who are able to spend a semester or equivalent period in residence at the Institute. Distinguished Fellows work closely with the Institute’s collections on an independent research project addressing the history of chemical or molecular science, broadly construed. They also participate in Beckman Center scholarly programs and contribute to the fellowship community in a mentorship capacity.
