Chateaubriand fellowships
Encouraging and supporting mobility and exchanges of Israeli students and young researchers to France
Eligible fields : Exact and life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences (medical and specialization internships in French hospitals and clinics are not included in this program).
Since 1988, the French government has been funding Chateaubriand Fellowships Program. Those fellowships are aimed at encouraging and supporting mobility and exchanges of Israeli students and young researchers to France. Thanks to this program, more than 400 Israeli students and scientists had the opportunity to pursue research in France.
Far from being simple grant holders, Chateaubriand fellows benefit from many advantages: social security, access to university restaurants, lodgings on campus and more. Moreover, Chateaubriand fellows are advised and helped by the French Consulate to obtain information about the conditions of entry and their stay in France.
From now on, Chateaubriand fellowships are aimed only for conducting research in France :
TRAINING RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS - HIGH LEVEL SCIENTIFIC STAY, open for applying online from October 28, 2024 until December 18, 2024 at midnight !
Israeli scientists, who are currently studying for a Ph.D. in Israel or who have completed their Ph.D., and want to carry out research in a French research institution. The research will be carried out in a French University, a School of Engineering or a Public Research Laboratory.
These training research fellowships are for a period of minimum 4 months and up to 6 months during 2025 only. They are non-renewable and non splittable.
For students who are currently studying for a Ph.D in an Israeli university and want to carry out research in France for a period of 4 to 6 months , the monthly fellowships amount is 1704 €. Once the researcher arrives to France, Campus France (French organization that takes care of your stay in France and your allowance) will take care of the payment as well as of a health insurance for the whole period of the fellowships. For PhD students, candidate should be born after March 1, 1990.
For young researchers (who are up to 5 years after their Ph.D graduation) who want to carry out research in France for a period of 4 to 6 months , the monthly fellowships amount is 1704 €. Once the researcher arrives to France, Campus France (French organization that takes care of your stay in France and your allowance) will take care of the payment as well as of a health insurance for the whole period of the fellowships. For young researchers, candidate should be born after March 1, 1990.
For researchers (who are more than 5 years after their Ph.D graduation) and want to carry out research in France for a period of 4 to 6 months , the monthly fellowships amount is 2055 €. Once the researcher arrives to France, Campus France (French organization that takes care of your stay in France and your allowance) will take care of the payment as well as of a health insurance for the whole period of the fellowships. For young researchers, candidate should be born after March 1, 1985.
* Researchers who do not have student status, will have to provide a valid employment contract or an attestation of fellowship from their home institution in Israel, in order to carry out a mobility in their host laboratory in France.
* The fellowships laureates will have to start their stay in France no earlier than 1 March 2025 and return to Israel at the latest by December 31, 2025.
Selection Process and Results
The most important criterion of selection are excellent academic background of the candidate, scientific quality of the project, scientific quality of the host team, interest of the project for the French-Israeli scientific cooperation over the long term. The jury is composed of Israeli and/or French university professors under the chairmanship of the Scientific Attaché. Results will be sent to candidates by February 28, 2025.
Chateaubriand fellowships in a few figures
- 1704 € per month for Israeli PhD students, affiliated to an Israeli Research Center and for young researchers up to 5 years after their PhD graduation - for a research period of 4 to 6 months in France.
- 2055 € per month for Israeli researchers, affiliated to an Israeli Research Center, who are more than 5 years after their graduation - for a research period of 4 to 6 months in France.
- Health insurance is provided by Campus France (French organization that takes care of your stay in France and your allowance)
Conditions
- Eligible disciplines : Exact sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences (medical and specialization internships in French hospitals and clinics are not included in this program).
- Must have Israeli citizenship. Dual French-Israeli citizenship owners are not eligible to apply.
- Have been accepted or invited by a French university, laboratory or research institute.
- Should be able to provide a valid employment contract or a fellowship attestation within an Israeli research institution.
Age
- For PhD. students, candidates should be born after March 1, 1990.
- For Researchers, candidates should be born after March 1, 1985.
Diploma origin
- For PhD. students, they must be enrolled in a PhD program in an Israeli university.
- For researchers, no diploma origin conditions, as long as they are afiliated in an Israeli university. .
Chateaubriand Fellowships 3 main milestones dates
- 1st date: Open for applying online from October 28 until December 18, 2024 at midnight
- 2nd date: The Jury results will be sent to the candidates by February 28, 2025.
- 3rd date: Departure to France is possible from March 1, 2025 only. Return to Israel on December 31, 2025 at the latest.

Additional Information
The monthly allowance is payable in France and is not taxable.
Lastly, at the end of your fellowships period in France, a report to the French Embassy in Israel is required regarding your stay in France: Scientific significance, probable future developments, comments on the reception/hospitality, etc. This document should be sent before the end of your fellowship.
