Wayne Vucinich Fellowship in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies

The Wayne Vucinich Fellowship is a twelve-week residential fellowship at the Stanford University Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES). During the fellowship period, the Vucinich Fellow is expected to pursue her or his independent research in residency and to participate actively in the scholarly activities of the Center. The fellow will have access to Stanford University Libraries and the Hoover Institution Library and Archives as well as a community of scholars at Stanford. The fellow will hold a lecture, seminar or workshop on his or her research, organized by CREEES.

Eligibility

The fellowship is open to scholars in any discipline whose research focuses on historical or contemporary topics in Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, or Central Asia. Scholars who have received the PhD within the past five years are eligible to apply. (A PhD in hand is required at the time the residency begins.) Preference will be given to scholars who are residents of countries that fall under the direct purview of the Center: Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

The fellowship funds international travel, health insurance, and visa support, in addition to a $15,000 stipend for living expenses. In addition to library access, the fellow will have use of a shared work space at the Center.

Application

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is now accepting applications for the Wayne Vucinich Fellowship competition. The Fellowship period will be between April and June 2024.  Applications will be accepted until November 17, 2023.

A complete application consists of the following materials:

  1. Wayne Vucinich Fellowship Application
  2. A letter of application/research proposal 
  3. A Curriculum Vitae
  4. A writing sample (book chapter or article length, in English)
  5. A short proposal for a public lecture/workshop to be held at Stanford (can be related to research proposal)
  6. Two (2) letters of recommendation

All materials listed above (with the exception of the letters of recommendation) should be submitted as attachments to the  online application form.
