Belfer Center Fellowships

The Belfer Center offers academic and professional track fellowships during the academic year. Fellows receive direct access to faculty members and other affiliated experts and are joined by a cohort of fellows in the fields of science and international affairs. 

The application period for the 2026-2027 academic year is now open. Applications close on December 1, 2025. Applicants will receive decisions by the end of February 2026.

Energy, Climate, and Technology Policy

Fellows will contribute to our ongoing research projects on energy policy, climate policy, climate finance, and energy technology innovation.

Who It's For

Predoctoral candidates, recent recipients of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, visiting scholars, and researchers at the junior faculty level.

Managing the Atom

The Project on Managing the Atom offers fellowships for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars, and mid-career professionals, for ten months. Research topics of interest include aspects of nuclear nonproliferation policy, nuclear weapons strategy, arms control, disarmament processes and verification, the future of nuclear energy, regional conflict and nuclear weapons, security for nuclear weapons and materials, and other issues of nuclear policy.

Current doctoral students in the dissertation-writing stage, recent recipients of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, and university faculty members and other mid-career professionals with relevant expertise.

International Security Program Fellowship

The International Security Program develops and trains new talent in security studies by hosting pre- and postdoctoral research fellows. The International Security Program offers fellowships in the following research areas: U.S.

The Geopolitics of Energy Project Fellowship focuses on topics related to the intersection of international politics, security, and energy.

Arctic Initiative

Fellows are expected to pursue research aligned with the priorities of the Arctic Initiative, focusing on the challenges and opportunities arising from the rapid transformation of the Arctic. A particular emphasis is placed on assessing the adequacy of existing governmental and international policies, programs, laws, and regulations in addressing these evolving issues, and exploring how they can be improved.

Technology and Geopolitics

The Technology and Geopolitics Fellowship is hosted by the Program on Emerging Technology, Scientific Advancement, and Global Policy (ETSAGP). ETSAGP, under the leadership of Belfer Center Director Dr. Meghan O’Sullivan and Program Director Dr. Michael McQuade, conducts scholarship, builds communities of practice, and trains leaders for an era in which scientific advancement and emerging technologies are ever more crucial drivers of global policy, governance, and geopolitics.
