The Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) and the NEH-funded initiative for Manuscript, Rare Book and Archive Studies (MARBAS) at Princeton University invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate or more senior researcher.

We seek an innovative, multidisciplinary scholar to join the Princeton community and contribute to initiatives at the intersection of manuscript studies and digital humanities. The scholar will spend 50% time on their own digital humanities research project. During the other 50%, they will work with the MARBAS team organizing seminars, coordinating pedagogical resources and advancing MARBAS goals through additional initiatives. Candidates with a background in the history of the ancient and/or medieval world and with knowledge of codicology, paleography and/or diplomatics in a premodern language tradition, and whose research integrates digital, data-driven, or computational methods, are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work focuses on non-Western traditions. The scholar will be affiliated with both the CDH and MARBAS and will participate in both groups' activities, including colloquia, discussion groups and events.

A successful candidate must show expertise in a disciplinary field, have a broad knowledge of the methods, tools, and trends in digital humanities and demonstrate a nuanced understanding of how the emergence of new technologies intersects with humanistic inquiry. Promising candidates must show interest in supporting students and colleagues in computational or data-intensive humanities work. They must have the capacity to work collaboratively, and have excellent communication, presentation and other interpersonal skills.

The selected candidate may have the option to teach during their appointment, subject to sufficient enrollments and with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty. If teaching, they will carry the additional title of Lecturer, and their MARBAS responsibilities will be reduced accordingly.

The term is anticipated to start on or about August 2023. Appointments are for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year pending satisfactory performance and continued funding. This appointment will be processed through the Department of Near Eastern Studies.

Candidates should have or expect to have a Ph.D. by the start date. Untenured scholars with fewer than four years of postdoctoral experience are eligible to apply.
