Loeb Classical Library Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Trustees of the Loeb Classical Library Foundation will be funding three two-year postdoctoral fellowships to be held in the academic years 2024–2026. The details for the competition for these fellowships are as follows:
Eligibility: Doctoral dissertation in the US or abroad in any area of classical studies, completed in the academic years 2022/23 or 2023/24.
Stipend: $60,000 plus reimbursements for health benefits (up to $5000 per annum) if needed, and for modest moving expenses (to $1500) where needed to take advantage of a Visiting Scholar status (on which see further below); $2000 research fund per year.
Application Process Timing: The application portal will open on November 13, 2023 for this round of funding. All application materials must be received by February 16, 2024 (firm). Judges' decision will be emailed to applicants before the end of March 2024. Those applicants selected for funding will have until April 30, 2024 to accept their award.
Residency: Fellows should aim to establish a visiting scholar relationship with an academic institution (in some cases the home institution may be the most suitable) in which they can best carry out their research program.
Application Materials: A cover letter; a proposal (maximum 1000 words) for a specific research project to be carried out during the term of the fellowship, including a rationale for the proposed academic affiliation (see above); curriculum vitae; 3 letters of recommendation (submitted online); writing sample (5000–10,000 words); (for 2023 degree candidates) TOC with page range of completed chapters, detailed statement in dissertation adviser’s letter on prospects for completion.
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement: James Loeb directed in his will that income from the Loeb Classical Library beyond that needed for the maintenance and enhancement of the Library eventually should be used "for the encouragement of special research at home and abroad in the province of Archaeology and of Greek and Latin Literature," and that awards should be granted "without distinction as to sex, race, nationality, color or creed."
