Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at the Center for Global Health Equity

NYU Shanghai is seeking up to three Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Global Public Health to join the Center for Global Health Equity at NYU Shanghai. The Center for Global Health Equity at NYU Shanghai, founded in January, 2022, is the home for cutting edge research that improves population health and wellbeing at NYU Shanghai. Leveraging the collective strengths of NYU Shanghai, The New York University School of Global Public Health, our New York University Global Campus Network, and our local, regional, and international partners, we focus on five core areas: Global Mental Health; Implementation Science; Migration and Occupational Health; Urban and Environmental Health; and Trauma and Adversity. We have four cross cutting themes that shape the contours of this work including: Digital Health and Technology; Life Course Perspectives; Governance and Health Policy; and Culture & Health. We utilize multidisciplinary perspectives and approaches grounded in Public Health Science, including the application of mixed methods and data science. The NYU Shanghai Center for Global Health Equity is a proud member of the Chinese Consortium for Universities in Global Health (CCUGH).

The postdoctoral position will be for a duration of 1 year with the ability to renew for up to two additional years upon mutual agreement.

Position 1: We are seeking applicants in the area of implementation science with a particular emphasis on scalable digital health interventions. Our Center is currently working with the World Health Organization to develop and implement a digital mental health agenda in the Western Pacific Region.

Position 2: The second position is for the area of migration and health. We are funded for the next four years to address barriers to health services among international migrants (African, Filipino, Indonesian, Vietnam) within a 5-country consortium (China, Germany, The Netherlands, South Africa, and Romania). The postdoctoral fellow would join this multidisciplinary consortium and work with faculty to design and implement the project within China.

Position 3: The third position is ideal for an Epidemiologist (open field) who has particular strengths in the conduct of epidemiological studies on urban health. Candidates who utilize a life course and culturally informed, life course, and social determinants perspective to the study of trauma, adversity, or migration are especially welcome to apply.

Responsibilities: Successful applicants will implement complex clinical trials, epidemiological investigations, systematic reviews/meta-analysis, and/or mixed methods research to answer key population health questions with various populations as indicated above. Planned work will involve rigorous mixed methods designs including cultural adaptation, randomized controlled trials, and process evaluations of scalable mental health interventions for populations experiencing adversity (migrants, survivors of gender-based violence, disaster exposed youth, and the urban poor). In addition to the conduct of trials, applicants will have the opportunity to work on disseminating research findings from several large-scale studies, including longitudinal mixed methods research studies conducted among migrant communities and among other populations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research fellows will work collaboratively with other fellows and faculty within the Center for Global Health Equity to manage studies, conduct statistical analyses, report writing, and journal publication (as lead author or co-author as appropriate). Postdoctoral fellows are expected to be active leaders within the research group and assist in the mentoring, training, and development of postgraduate and research-oriented undergraduates. Engagement in grant writing activities is also expected in support of the Center mission.

Qualifications

Qualifications for all positions:

Required Education

PhD in Public Health or relevant field (with evidence of advanced training, competence, and research in Public Health), or an MD with relevant Master’s degree (e.g., MPH).

Required Experience

• Experience with public health research projects in a leadership role (or ability to lead and work independently)
• Evidence of the ability to mentor, train, and develop the research potential of undergraduate and graduate students
• Previous experience working with NGO/iNGO partner organizations (preferred)
• A track record of academic accomplishment (e.g., journal publications) or strong scholarship potential

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Advanced training and skills in epidemiological methods, biostatistics, and/or qualitative methods and their application in mixed methods research
• Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary research environment alongside trainees at various levels
• Strong competencies in oral and written communication in English, and additional competence in written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin), and/or (Filipino, Indonesian, or one or more languages spoken in Africa) would be a distinct advantage, but not required
