Institute for Advanced Study of TU Munich (TUM-IAS)
Technische Universität Munich (TUM)
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) resolved in 2005 to establish the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS) as an international research institution. The new building of the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), which includes an auditorium, display areas, lounge areas, offices and a faculty club, was constructed at a central location on the TU Munich campus in Garching. The institute serves the purpose of interdisciplinary and intergenerational exchange between young and experienced scientists from all around the world.
The TUM IAS is a central corner stone of the institutional strategy of TUM and creates room for developing top level interdisciplinary research free of administrative loads. With the IAS, TUM aims to further promote competition and makes a significant contribution to the advancement of science.
"Risking Creativity" and the development of new, excellent research areas comprise the philosophy of the Institute. This includes also different scientific initiatives which are devoted to the idea of sustainability. Furthermore, it is an explicit goal to help scientists shape their careers and build up successful international cooperations. The TUM-IAS offers space for creative freedom.
With its Fellowship program, the TUM-IAS brings scientists together on three levels: early-career and experienced researchers, scientists from international research institutions and from TUM, as well as academic and industrial researchers. The Fellows define, develop, and establish new research fields together with TUM host professors and PhD students (Focus Groups).
With the construction of the IAS, the BMW Group donated a place of inspiration, meeting and cooperation for scientists from all over the world to the Technical University of Munich in 2010. We thank the BMW Group for its generous support.
