Researchers with short-term fellowships spend one to two months investigating specific collection items that are essential to their scholarship. These fellowship opportunities are open to scholars at the ABD stage and beyond.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Fellowship
Newberry-ACM Fellowships are open to all qualified candidates, while encouraging applications from individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, including African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, first generation college students, and individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to college.
Stipend: $3,000/month

The American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) Fellowship
Supporting scholars who wish to study the period between 1660 and 1815 and demonstrate a specific need for the Newberry’s collection.
Stipend: $3,000/month
Length: 1 month
Who can apply: Applicants must be members of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the time of the application and through the period of the fellowship.

The Charles Montgomery Gray Fellowship
Supporting scholars who demonstrate a specific need for the Newberry collection. This fellowship is open to all fields of study, with preference given to projects in the early modern period or Renaissance, as well as in English history, legal history, or European history.

This fellowship commemorates Schutte’s renowned scholarship and is available to early-career scholars studying the early modern period (1300-1700). Preference given to early career scholars in all fields of study with research related to women’s studies, spirituality, or Venice.

Who can apply: Artists and performers including (but not limited to) painters, sculptors, choreographers, dramaturgs, creative writers, composers, and others in artistic fields.

The Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship for Independent Researchers
This fellowship is for writers, journalists, filmmakers, visual and performing artists, and other humanists who wish to use the Newberry’s collection to further their creative work. Preference is given to individuals working on projects that focus on social justice or reform.
Stipend: $3,000/month

The Historical Fiction Writing Fellowship
Offering one month of support for a person working in the area of historical fiction. We encourage applications relating to a wide range of historical fiction including novels, short stories, plays and theatrical works, or poetry.
