Postdoctoral Scholar on Non-citizenship at Berkeley
The Chicano Latino Research Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), invites applications for the position of One-Year Postdoctoral Scholar as a part of Non-citizenship, a year-long Andrew W. Mellon Foundation John E. Sawyer Seminar on the Comparative Study of Culture under the direction of Professor Catherine S. Ramírez. We welcome applications from scholars in any discipline or field in the humanities or humanistic social sciences who study migration, mobility, and/or (non-)citizenship in any region of the world or period.
The Non-citizenship Sawyer Seminar is a year-long series of events rethinking the categories of citizen and non-citizen, their connections, and their fissures. The seminar’s primary goal will be to foster a dialogue about belonging and rights, to shed light on the historical development of the category of the non-citizen, and to produce knowledge for a world being remade by human mobility.
Applicants should be able to contribute to the Chicano Latino Research Center and units in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and/or Arts Divisions in humanities-based investigations that are observational and/or theoretical in nature. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out original research, independently or in collaboration with faculty, students, or visiting scholars affiliated with the Chicano Latino Research Center and units with which we collaborate; to participate in seminar activities with faculty, students, and visiting scholars, such as workshops, film screenings, lectures, and colloquia; and to help build a research and teaching tool for scholars, teachers, and other researchers with an interest in migration, mobility, and/or (non-)citizenship, such as a syllabus bank. There are no teaching obligations.
Basic qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in the humanities or humanistic social sciences is expected to be completed by July 1, 2016.
Closing date
Review of applications will begin on January 08, 2016. To ensure full consideration, applications should be complete and letters of recommendation received by this date. The position will remain open until filled.
