IUB School of Global and International Studies (SGIS)

The School of Global and International Studies is a new international affairs school that builds on two centuries of tradition and excellence in global studies at Indiana University.

Our 500 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in four academic departments and twenty-one institutes and centers that cover every corner of the globe.

We are located in a new LEED certified building that opened in August, 2015 featuring state of the art classrooms, a large auditorium, and a broadcast studio. It is a building designed for collaboration, where every classroom and the hallways outside them feature dry-erase boards with tables and chairs nearby. We also have a “global table” in our student lounge, where students and faculty can study, relax, and compare notes on the table’s dry-erase surface. The center of our building is the wall of stones from around the world, which unites Bloomington’s famous limestone tradition with every continent.

Our new home is located at the heart of the campus, physically and literally bridging IU’s outstanding professional schools with our renowned College of Arts and Sciences. Our students graduate with genuine global understanding matched with an emphasis on career services and successful placement in government, the private sector, and NGOs. Many students pursue studies in leading graduate programs from business to law and international studies. We offer joint degrees and minors with the Kelley School of Business, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and an accelerated five-year BA-JD degree with the Maurer School of Law.

Our new building houses our core faculty and affiliated faculty, 250 scholars from nearly every academic discipline. Our faculty includes MacArthur Scholars, diplomats, former government officials, including Rep. Lee Hamilton and Senator Dick Lugar, who embody the Midwest’s historic bi-partisan commitment to American engagement in the world.

What Makes SGIS Unique?

Indiana has one of the nation’s finest area studies programs. Our area studies departments and institutes are multidisciplinary. Our scholars come from virtually every academic field.

We believe that to change the world, it is critical first to seek to understand it. That is why we ask all our students to study overseas and to achieve competency in a foreign language. At SGIS, we teach over 70 foreign languages, and more than 75 percent of our students study overseas.

We are networked; SGIS is one of five founding members of the Carnegie International Policy Scholars Consortium, including the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Our students achieve.  Our students are among the highest achievers on campus. Upon graduation, they enter fields as varied as medicine, law, global consulting, the State Department, and human rights organizations.

We are growing. Through the generosity of our state and university, SGIS is adding 25 new tenure track faculty, more than any other foreign affairs school. We are also adding graduate programs in International Studies and joint programs with the Maurer School of Law and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
