UT Institute for Historical Studies (IHS)

Université du Texas

The History Department was established with the founding of The University of Texas and is one of its core disciplines.  Our faculty have an outstanding record of publication and grant awards and a significant portion receive funding from national agencies and research institutions each year.  Our department includes a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and seven current or former Guggenheim Fellows in addition to recipients of numerous other national book awards and fellowships.

University President William Powers Jr. has substantially increased our budget to hire and retain nationally renowned faculty, to enhance faculty research assignments, to create an Institute for Historical Studies, and to offer fellowship packages for graduate students that are nationally competitive.  Our departmental strengths include many thematic fields and wide geographic and chronological coverage. Our program in Latin American history has been consistently ranked number one by U.S. News and World Report in the country. We are very strong as well in empires and globalization, diaspora and migration, borderlands, visual and material cultures, gender, religion, and transnational history. The university is a vibrant intellectual community which houses a cluster of libraries with remarkable holdings located in what is often rated one of the most livable cities in the country with a wide range of cultural and outdoor amenities.
