Global Fellowship Scheme
Deadline for applications is Monday 2 March 2026.
Applicants to the Global Fellowship Scheme should be recognised as significant scholars in their field or emerging leaders who have made a contribution to original research that extends the frontier of knowledge. Global Fellows are expected to hold an established academic position.
Conditions
Global Fellows will be expected to engage online with students and staff throughout the 2026-2027 academic year, and participate in one visit of up to four weeks between 1 August 2026 and 31 July 2027. Applicants not available during this time should consider applying in a future round of the scheme.
The University provides all Global Fellows with:
The University cannot offer a buy-out for teaching at the home institution. Candidates will usually be on a sabbatical or research leave, or indicate a time when they are free during the year.
tailored travel and visit support provided by the University’s Global Office
a stipend of £1000 per 28 day visit (or per day sum for shorter visits)
self-catered accommodation in a one bedroom apartment or equivalent
return airfare in economy class, booked by the University
airport transfers to and from St Andrews
access to University IT and library facilities
Expectations
Global Fellows are expected to contribute to the scholarly community at St Andrews. This includes interacting with a wide range of staff and students, and participating in the scholarly activities of Academic Schools, Centres and Institutes, both online and in person throughout the 2026-2027 academic year.
Global Fellows will normally give a research seminar, postgraduate lecture, undergraduate training activity or similar during their visit.
For applicants who would be otherwise unable to visit in person due to caring commitments or other similar responsibilities, a fully virtual Global Fellowship may be considered. A shorter visit may also be arranged to support those unable to visit for an extended period.
Eligibility
Candidates must have completed a PhD degree or equivalent before submitting an application to the scheme.
Candidates must also be based outside the UK and be employed in a university, research institute or similar.
Selection
Applications will be reviewed by the relevant Schools, and final award decisions will be made centrally by a multidisciplinary selection committee composed of senior academic and professional staff at the University of St Andrews.
Results will be announced by Friday 29 May 2026. Please note that it will not be possible to provide detailed feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
How to apply
Before applying, applicants are encouraged to identify shared research interests and ensure alignment with their proposed host School.
While not mandatory, we strongly recommend contacting an appropriate St Andrews academic to discuss the proposed collaboration and the Global Fellowship application. Contact information can usually be found in the People section of Academic School webpages.
Applicants should send a completed 2026-2027 Global Fellowship application form (Word) and their academic CV to globalfellows@st-andrews.ac.uk by 17:00 (GMT) on 2 March 2026.
Acknowledgment emails will typically be sent to applicants within three working days.
