The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) is an Organized Research Unit that serves as the focal point for UC Berkeley programs related to East Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. East Asian Studies at Berkeley in particular, which is frequently ranked first in depth and breadth among all such programs in the nation, is a unique national resource and an invaluable asset for California and the West Coast.

The Institute unites a wide range of Asia-focused programs on the UC Berkeley campus, including:

The Institute fosters the interdisciplinary study of contemporary and historical East Asia and Southeast Asia, including the region's relationship to the United States. It draws on a broad spectrum of eminent Berkeley faculty in a variety of fields and professional schools, including anthropology, architecture, art history, business, economics,languages and cultures, film studies, geography, history, journalism, law, public health, political science, psychology, social welfare, and sociology. It also partners with communities and organizations outside academia, including business, journalism, government and the world of art and culture, to strengthen teaching and research on Asia at Berkeley.

IEAS is closely affiliated with the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures(link is external) and the East Asian Library(link is external), while its centers also foster links with other departments, libraries, international and area studies institutes, centers, and programs on the Berkeley campus.

IEAS is located on the 5th floor of 1995 University Avenue, at the intersection of Milvia Street and University Avenue in downtown Berkeley.
