The main applicant must be an internationally recognised professor with tenure.

The Carlsberg Foundation also welcomes research groups to apply. However, the researcher who applies on behalf of the group must be a professor with tenure.

The earliest start date for Semper Ardens: Advance is 1 March 2023.

The total amount applied for must be within a budget of DKK 15 - 20 million.

Grants for this instrument are given as a framework grant and may be used to cover expenses that are relevant and necessary to complete the activity, such as consumables, equipment, travel, conferences etc.

The amount applied for may only include salaries for the following:

  • Salaries for postdocs.
  • Salaries for PhD students and tuition fee. It is required that enrolment of the PhD students at a Danish PhD graduate school is guaranteed.
  • Salary for a project coordinator for up to twelve months during the project period.
  • Up to a total of three months’ salary for the main applicant. 

If applying as a research group, it is possible for the main applicant to transfer the 3 months' salary to another researcher in the research group. However, this must be specified in the application.

The application must be submitted in English.

Peer review

Each full application will be sent to three high-level international experts within the relevant scientific area(s) for external peer review.

Each reviewer will be asked to assess the applications according to the Carlsberg Foundation’s ‘Assessment Criteria for Reviewers’.

Reviewers will be asked to declare a possible conflict of interest. If a conflict is identified, the reviewer will not be used.

The peer reviews will serve as an important input to the board’s decision, but it is the board that makes the final decision.

Applicants will not get the opportunity to comment on the reviews prior to the board’s final decision.

On the basis of the application and external peer review, the board’s final decision will be made in two stages:

Stage I:
Invitation to a short interview or rejection letter.
Interviews are scheduled to take place in the week 16 - 20 January 2023.

Stage II:
Grant letter or rejection letter after interview.

Application requirements

The application must be submitted through CF-Grant (application system)

Project description
The project description must not exceed five A4 pages (including figures, tables, etc.). The five A4 pages must not exceed 15,000 characters including spaces, figure captions, formulas, etc. 

The font Times New Roman, font size 12, at least 2 cm margin on the left, right, top and bottom, and line spacing of 1.5. must be used.

References/ bibliography must be uploaded as a separate appendix under “Additional appendices” in CF-Grant.

Curriculum Vitae
CV for the main applicant as well as CVs for all the named researchers in the research group must be uploaded.

Each CV must not exceed two A4 pages.

List of publications
List of publications for the main applicant for the last five years as well as lists of publications for the named researchers in the research group must be uploaded.

Budget
An itemised budget for the amount applied for must be uploaded using the Carlsberg Foundation budget template.

Short description of the research group and its organization
A short description of the research group and its organization must be uploaded including an explanation of the expected composition of the research group, diversity and gender balance.

Description of the expected impact of the research on education and teaching
A description of the expected impact of the research on education and teaching must be uploaded.

Declaration of support from the host institution with a specification of possible embedment options
A declaration of support from the host institution with a specification of possible embedment options must be uploaded.

If relevant: Salary confirmation
A salary confirmation signed by the host institution certifying the accuracy of the salary(ies) applied for must be uploaded using the Carlsberg Foundation template.

If relevant: Quotes on instruments, register data, etc.
Quotes on instruments, register data, etc., must be uploaded.

If relevant: National/international network
A specification of proposed activities (such as travels, meetings, symposia, conferences, etc.) and their costs in relation to establishing a national and/or international research network must be uploaded.
