INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES IN HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES (IAS)

Founded in May 2005, the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Studies is the first advanced research institute for studies in humanities and social sciences in China mainland. With a vision to further build Nanjing University into an international comprehensive and research-intensive university, the Institute is meant as a special zone for advanced research in humanities and social sciences, to break disciplinary boundaries and encourage cross- disciplinary studies with a problem-solving approach. Research positions in the Institute include guest professorship, distinguished professorship and residential professorship. There are six prominent research teams focused on “Study on Extraterritorial Chinese Books”, “Environmental Studies,” “Media and Culture Studies,” “Gender Studies,” “City and Space Studies”, and “Construction of a Modern System of Knowledge: China and East Asia(CMSK)”. The Institute has also offered students successful series of lectures such as “Masters’ Forum”, “Academic Forefront” and “Theme Lectures” .
