European People’s Party Postgraduate Research Grant(s) Programme
The Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) in the European Parliament(EPP Group) has created grant programme for researchers interested in the history, role and impact of Christian Democracy, and in particular of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, on decisive moments in the process of European integration.
Objectives
The aim of the grant is to stimulate and support research in the field, leading to the publication of a scholarly article in an international peer-reviewed academic journal.
This grant programme is designed to enable researchers to broaden their research by studying the primary sources held at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence, at the EPP Group’s archives in Brussels and/or at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in Sankt Augustin - Bonn.
Admission
The following researchers are eligible to apply:
- All current postgraduate students (master’s and doctoral candidates);
- All postdoctoral researchers who have completed a doctorate degree in the past three years preceding the date of submission of the application.
Applicants should carry out a research relating to the impact of Christian Democracy and the EPP Group on European integration in one or more of the disciplines of human and social sciences (e.g. history, political sciences, law, etc.).
Research projects presented should preferably be directly related to the applicants master or doctoral field of research.
In view of the nature of the files concerned, candidates should have a sound knowledge of English and French. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.
Only individual applications will be considered for the programme.
Candidates may not submit an application with the same research subject on more than two occasions.
These eligibility criteria will be strictly applied.
Application Procedures and Deadline
The call for applications in 2024 is open from 1 March 2024 to 31 May 2024.
Candidates may apply through the HAEU's online application form once the call is open.
Applications and all supporting documentation must be submitted in either English or French.
Completed application files should include:
- CV with any previous publications (max 2 pages);
- Presentation of the research proposal, including a description of the research subject, its academic significance and the proposed research methodology and timetable (max 5 pages);
- Bibliography of sources and studies related to the research (max 5 pages);
- Justification of the need to use primary archival sources (max 2 pages);
- Letter of recommendation from a university or university-level research institute.
Grant Awards
Successful applicants will receive a research grant of €5000 to cover all expenses.
The grant will be paid in two instalments:
- a first instalment of €1800 at the start of the research, as attested by the Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union;
- a second instalment of €3200 after the publication of the scholarly article in an academic journal or a monography based on the research effected.
The publication should be issued not more than 36 months after the attribution of the grant.
Selection and Notification
The Selection Committee is composed of representatives of the EPP Group and the Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence. Decisions are based upon the quality of the application file, the significance and originality of the proposed research, the pertinence of the project, the candidate’s ability to carry out the research satisfactorily within the deadline, and the importance of using the Archives.
Up to three grants may be awarded.
Publications and Commitments
Grant holders will commit to ensure that all publications or productions, using in whole or in part the results obtained, will appropriately “acknowledge the support of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) in the European Parliament for the research and the publication within the framework of the Postgraduate Research Grant Programme on Christian Democracy and European Integration”.

The views and opinions of the Grant holders do not necessarily state or represent the official position of the EPP Group.
Grant holders will undertake to inform the Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union:
- twice a year on the progress made with the research;
- on the publication result once the research is completed;
Additionally, grant holders will provide the Historical Archives of the European Union and the EPP Group with a copy of any such publications or productions.
