Job position requirements

  • PhD in History or East Asian Studies, with a focus on Japan. Candidates holding PhDs awarded by Japanese institutions preferred.
  • 0-4 years of postdoctoral experience upon starting the position.
  • Ability to conduct archival research using premodern Japanese sources.
  • Develop a line of research in accordance with one of the project’s three core themes (Authority, Management, Exchange)
  • Produce at least two peer-reviewed articles (or their equivalent) from this research.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to take the lead on facilitate a paleography seminar for the group – potentially expanding to external participants, and to co-organize with the PI an annual International paleaography workshop.
  • Contribute to the professional development of the team, particularly junior colleagues and predoctoral researchers. The PI will similarly commit to a concrete plan of professional development for the candidate.

Eligibility criteria 

Candidates must have a terminal degree in a related field and be within 4 years of their PhD at the time of application. They should expect to reside in Barcelona during the duration of the contract, and be able to travel to Japan (or elsewhere) for archival and fieldwork. Must be able to conduct independent research in the required primary languages.

Selection process

Applications will be accepted until 1 September. Short-listed candidates will be asked to submit a longer research proposal and writing sample. All materials at both stages may be submitted in either English or Japanese. Interview of shortlisted candidates will be completed within three weeks of the
submission deadline. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese and English. The start date is flexible, but is expected to be between 1 February and the 1 May, 2026.
