BIAA David French Scholarship

In memory of archaeologist Dr David French, Director of the British Institute at Ankara from 1969-1985 and indefatigable explorer of Türkiye ancient and modern, his family have established two scholarships to be administered by the Institute.

Two travel grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support undergraduate or postgraduate students to develop knowledge and understanding of the region’s history, geography, culture and environment. Applications relating to an individual’s first visit to Türkiye for study purposes will be particularly welcomed.

Applicants should be enrolled on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution. The fieldwork or other research activity for which support is sought may relate to any historical period up to and including contemporary Türkiye.

It is essential that applicants read the Notes for Applicants below and the accompanying conditions of awards before completing the application form. Applicants in any doubt about their eligibility or any other aspect of their application are advised to contact the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) via biaa@thebritishacademy.ac.uk, where staff will be pleased to assist.

The deadline for receipt of applications and references is 26 April 2026, 23:59 UK time. The BIAA Research Committee will consider all applications received before this date.
