Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER)
Memorial University of Newfoundland
The Institute of Social and Economic Research is housed within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Memorial University. It was established in 1961 to foster and support research into the many social and economic questions arising from the particular historic, geographic, and economic circumstances of Newfoundland and Labrador. The mandate was later expanded to include research on the broader Atlantic world.
The institute houses Memorial University Press and provides grant and fellowship funding to support specific research projects through an annual competition. Applicants may also apply for grants to support conferences that fall within its mandate and there is a student essay prize competition. The Institute encourages interdisciplinary as well as discipline-based research, and basic research as well as work with more immediate applications.
