LabEx State transformation, politicisation of society, institutionalisation of social issues (Tepsis)

In contrast to the hyper-specialisation of contemporary social sciences, the TEPSIS LABEX project aims to establish the foremost French and European national and international research platform in the Historical and Social Sciences of Politics. Its chosen object is the diversity of modes of political involvement in the polity and in the domain of contemporary societies. It proposes to link analysis of the governmental and administrative modes of modern and contemporary societies with analysis of the social practices which are transforming the organisational and regulatory forms of human activity. TEPSIS is an integral part of the excellence initiative project “Paris Novi Mundi Université” (PNMU) led by the PRES HESAM. It brings together researchers and teams from 12 Research Centres associated with the CNRS (all of which are evaluated as A+ or A by the AERES) and from the ENA research centre. Its 249 professors, researchers and engineers constitute by far the foremost grouping in France – and one of the foremost in Europe – in this field of research. Altogether, they have obtained more than 70 ANR and 3 ERC grants.

The priorities of the TEPSIS programme are organised around three axes:

  • 1/ State Transformation
  • 2/ Politicisation of Society
  • 3/ Institutionalisation of Social Issues.

These divided into nine major teaching and research themes led by pluridisciplinary teams bringing together several UMR (mixed research units): Historicity of the State; State weaknesses; Politics within and beyond the State; Political timescales, territorial discontinuity, and mobilisation; Everyday relations to politics; Legitimacy and delegitimation of elites; The political construction of subjectivities; The structuring of the social order; Social differentiations and inequalities and two federative transversal operations: The Encyclopedia of the historical and social sciences of politics; which is the concrete realisation of the common work achieved by TEPSIS and is published on-line; and the Descriptive repertory of politics, a constantly evolving database which provides the foremost international monitoring tool on political forms.
