BMI Fellow in Humanistic Studies

In cooperation with the College of Liberal Arts, Black Mountain Institute provides the opportunity for a senior scholar to spend an academic year at UNLV pursuing humanistic research, writing, and engaging with a vibrant community of intellectuals.

The Fellow will be welcomed and provided an office by the appropriate academic department at UNLV. Teaching is not required, though opportunities may be explored if desired by the successful candidate. Fellows are expected to attend Black Mountain Institute activities, such as readings and panel discussions, and to engage with our community of writers, scholars, and students. Further occasions for fellows to share their work, such as guest lecture or speaking opportunities, may be arranged with the host department. The appointment is for one academic year from late August until mid May.

The position is open to all scholars in the humanities, whether currently affiliated with an academic institution, emeritus/emerita faculty members, or working independently. For faculty members, the fellowship will match current salaries, up to a level commensurate with a full professorship; for independent scholars, the fellowship will be competitive with other prestigious national grants. Benefits are available if necessary, and the Fellow will have access to a fully furnished, rent-controlled home in a quiet neighborhood and the use of a car.

Candidates should be well published and recognized as among the preeminent figures in their area of scholarship.
