Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Veni - Social Sciences and Humanities

The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme offers personal grants to talented, creative researchers. The funding enables applicants to do their own line of research. This boosts innovative research and promotes mobility within scientific research institutes.

The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme comprises three grants geared to different stages in a researcher’s scientific career:

• Veni, for researchers who have recently obtained their PhD
• Vidi, for researchers who have gained several years of research experience after their PhD
• Vici, for senior researchers who have demonstrated an ability to develop their own line of research

Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Veni

Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Veni is a grant for researchers who have recently obtained their PhD.

Purpose

Veni is part of the Incentives Scheme. It allows researchers who have recently obtained their PhD to conduct independent research and develop their ideas for a period of three years.

Who can apply

NWO Talent Programme Veni is targeted at researchers who have recently obtained their PhD, whose qualities clearly exceed what is customary within their international peer group. They are at the start of their scientific career and display a striking talent for scientific research. Veni applicants must have obtained their doctorate within the last three years. The 2021 Veni round is open to researchers who meet this criterion on 1 January 2021.

A researcher may apply for a Veni grant on a maximum of two occasions.

Researchers from outside the Netherlands may apply.

When to apply

One funding round is held every year.

• The deadline for submitting a full proposal for all domains is 2 september 2021, 14:00hrs

Due to a hack of the NWO networkserver the grant procedure has been at a standstill for five weeks from 13 February to 22 March 2021. The actual deadline for submitting a full proposal for all domains was 20 May 2021. The deadline for submitting the compulsory pre-proposal within SSH was 7 January 2021.

Applications received after the deadline are automatically disqualified.

Assessment

Criteria

The assessment criteria for the pre-proposals are:

• Academic profile (50%)
• Key output (50%)

The assessment criteria for the full proposals are:

• quality, innovative character and academic impact of the research proposal (40%), and
• knowledge utilisation (20%)
• quality of the researcher (40%)

Procedure

The assessment of pre-proposals and full applications within SSH takes place in six panels. The allocation of proposals to a panel is determined by the applicants.
 
The panels assess the applications in all phases: the pre-proposal phase, interview selection, and interview. In the pre-proposal phase NWO does not ask external reviewers to assess applications. In the interview selection phase the panels assess the full applications, expert reviewers reports and rebuttals and select the most promising applications for an interview.

Interviews take place within the panels; candidates are interviewed and assessed by committee members from their own discipline and neighbouring disciplines within the SSH Domain.
