Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowships at IKGF Erlangen-Nuremberg "Fate, Freedom and Prognostication"
The International Consortium for Research in the Humanities (IKGF) "Fate, Freedom, and Prognostication. Strategies for Coping with the Future in East Asia and Europe" at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg invites applications for fellowships.
We invite scholars from the broader field of Sinology who are working on issues related to our research focus "Fate, Freedom and Prognostication" and preferably those who are open to a comparative approach with an Asian-European perspective.
We further invite scholars of European Medieval History and Premodern Societies who are working on the given research focus “Fate, Freedom and Prognostication” and who are open to a comparative perspective. The Consortium also offers several opportunities in fields beyond the leading disciplines of Sinology and Medieval History. We welcome scholars from broader research fields, namely East and South Asian Studies, Philosophy, History of Thought, History of Science, Social History, History of European Early Modern Times, Religious Studies, Ethnology, Literary Studies and Economy.
Please note: For fellowships in the field of Chinese Studies we can currently only invite applications that start in 2020 or later.
The IKGF family is devoted to facilitating research on prognostication and prediction across time, place, and discipline. During your stay, we expect you to contribute a chapter to our book projects or an article related to one of our research themes. We support you in pursuing your own topics that match our agenda by offering an inspiring research atmosphere in an interdisciplinary and international environment, which includes collaboration and intellectual exchange with all research disciplines at the Consortium.
The stipend is competitive and offers the possibility to substitute the fellow at his or her home institution. Fellowships at the Consortium comprise a period of six to twelve months. We may postpone your research stay in order to position it during an appropriate research phase to promote exchange among visiting scholars with a similar research focus. The Consortium covers return travel expenses to Erlangen. A fully-equipped office will be provided as well as organizational help for visa application and housing.
Visiting scholars must hold a PhD degree and have outstanding expertise in the focus of the research project. We expect your presence at the Consortium during your research stay and your participation in the Consortium's activities, together with substantial research results in the form of publications.
The Consortium is an international institution and the main language spoken is English. A knowledge of German is not required, although it would be an advantage. Candidates of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. The Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg is an equal opportunity employer.
To apply for this fellowship, candidates are requested to send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, publication list, copies of certificates (PhD), and a research proposal (up to 1000 words) together with the name and address of two referees.
The Consortium reviews applications three times per year. The respective deadlines are January 15th, April 15th and September 15th. Up to ten international scholars may conduct research at the Consortium at any one time.
