ERA4Health
This Partnership brings the opportunity to increase European transnational collaborative research funding by creating a funding body for joint programming in priority areas addressing European public health needs.
The EU-funded ERA4Health Partnership brings together 32 entities and 27 funding organisations from 21 countries, with the common goal of fostering high-impact translational research for addressing public health needs.
Through cross-national joint calls for proposals and making the most of interregional and international cooperation, ERA4Health aims to provide influential contributions as well as a sustainable model of funding for ground-breaking translational research in the health domain across Europe and beyond.
ERA4Health focuses on tackling diseases and reducing disease burden by addressing the following challenges:
- The increasing demand for a better quality of life and a better care of patients.
- The need to transform public health care systems in a more effective, efficient, equitable, accessible, and resilient ones.
- the need to strengthen disease prevention and health promotion.
34 Funding Organisations covering:
- 20 of the actual 27 members of the European Union
- 3 Third Countries associated to Horizon Europe (Israel, Norway, Turkey)
- 2 Third countries (Egypt, Taiwan)
Objectives
The ERA4Health objectives are to:
- Support relevant medical research including clinical fields and intervention areas (prevention, diagnosis, treatment).
- Improve the utilisation of existing health technologies in clinical practice.
- Build capacity, in particular in conducting Investigator Initiated Clinical Studies at EU scale.
- Implement and advance the practice of RRI across the breadth of the programme.
ERA4Health will be implemented in 2 phases:
- Phase 1 will implement joint calls focused on nutrition and lifestyle-related diseases, cardiovascular diseases and nanomedicine. Four calls are expected to be launched during the first two years).
- Phase 2. After Phase I, additional joint calls and multinational investigator initiated clinical studies for other priority areas are expected to be launched in accordance with the decision of the Health Programme Committee and the European Commission.
Work package structure
ERA4Health will pursue the previous objectives through the implementation of 22 interrelated work packages divided into 4 pillars:

- Pillar 2 for Joint Funding Activities
- Pillar 2A – Joint Transnational Calls
- Pillar 2B – Investigator Initiated Clinical Studies
- Pillar 3 for Transversal activities
Partners
Built on a well-established cooperation, ERA4Health brings together 33 entities from 22 countries with the common goal of addressing public health needs, ensuring that combined financial resources are used in the most effective and efficient way, best practices are shared, knowledge is created, disseminated and used for the benefit of all key stakeholders.
Consortium partners are a mix of ministries, national and regional funding agencies, not-for-profit intergovernmental organisation and foundations. A number of the current consortium partners have been involved in previous ERANETs (e.g. EuroNanoMedIII, CVD, NEURON Cofund2 and ERA PerMed, etc.).
