Overview

The Warburg Institute, alongside Harvard University's Center for the Study of World Religions and the Centre(Opens in new window) for the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam(Opens in new window), invites applications for their joint Postdoctoral Fellowship in Spirituality and the Arts. This fellowship is an opportunity for scholars to engage in research that explores the dynamic interplay between spirituality and artistic expression, within the framework of the “Transcendence and Transformation(Opens in new window)” initiative.

The fellowship provides an annual salary of $65,000, plus an additional $3,000 allocated specifically for conference travel expenses.

Fellowship Duration and Structure

The fellowship is set to commence on September 1, 2024, and will conclude on August 31, 2025. While primarily based at Harvard University's Center for the Study of World Religions, the programme includes research periods at each partner institution. The fellow will have the opportunity to spend up to two months at the Warburg Institute and the Centre for the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents, engaging with unique collections and scholarly communities.

Research Focus

Applicants are encouraged to propose innovative research projects that align with the theme of “Transcendence and Transformation(Opens in new window).” This initiative seeks to explore and understand the ways in which spiritual and artistic practices intersect and how they contribute to personal and communal transformation.

Fellow Responsibilities

The selected fellow will:

  • Conduct original research within the fellowship’s thematic scope.
  • Participate in and contribute to academic and public programs across the partner institutions, including lectures, workshops, and conferences.
  • Engage with the scholarly community.
  • Potentially contribute to the partner institutions' publications.

Eligibility and Application Process

Candidates must have completed their PhD in a related field by the start date of the fellowship.

 We seek applicants who can demonstrate the following qualifications:

  1. Completed advanced degree in a relevant field (PhD or ThD awarded within the past five years).
  2. A research project that aligns with the Center’s “Transcendence and Transformation” initiative, and with the partner institutions.
  3. Evidence of publications relevant to that research project.
  4. An ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • A detailed research proposal (max 1,000 words) including proposals for short research stays.
  • Contact information for three references.
  • A writing sample.

Please note that the fellow is expected to reside in Massachusetts or the New England area for the duration of the fellowship within commuting distance to the Center for the Study of World Religions.
