The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) was conceived and established in 1988 by the vision and initiative of the late Mr J.R.D. Tata primarily to nurture a broad base of scholars, managers and leaders to address complex and important challenges faced by society through interdisciplinary approaches. The institute also engages in advanced multidisciplinary research in the areas of natural sciences and engineering humanities, social sciences as well as conflict and security studies. For more details: www.nias.res.in Project: Develop Natural Resource Utilization Plan for Biodiversity Hotspots The project aims at understanding the natural resource availability and utilization pattern in biodiversity hotspots in two study regions, namely, the Wester Ghats (Karnataka) and the Eastern Ghats (Odisha), with emphasis on interactions between recent natural resource dynamics and socio-economic factors of resource demand and utilization. Use the above understanding to develop sustainable models for resource utilization in the future. The project will extensively make use of field surveys (ecological and socioeconomic), satellite data and integrated geospatial analysis and document its findings
