Our Institute is a research facility established by the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. The Department of Social Law is devoted to basic research in the field of foreign and international social law. We are offering one Postdoc position (m/f/d) for the Research Group “Our Children’s Children: A Comparative Analysis of Constitutional Protections of Future Generations.

Your tasks

The selected candidate will be part of the Minerva Fast Track Research Group led by Dr. Irene Domenici. The group will explore the role of constitutional and public law in safeguarding the rights and well-being of future generations, with a particular focus on climate change, social law and budget law. The successful candidate will contribute to the group’s research through comparative legal analysis and independent research, bringing in original ideas that align with the broader objectives of the project. Their work will involve examining constitutional frameworks, judicial decisions, and legislative approaches across multiple jurisdictions, and identifying innovative legal mechanisms for strengthening the protection of future generations.

The preferred starting date is 1st September 2025, with some flexibility for a later start if needed.

Your profile

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in law or a related discipline at the time of application. They should have a strong research background in a relevant field such as public law, environmental law or public finances, with an interest in comparative legal methods. Familiarity with legal developments in Global South jurisdictions will be considered an advantage. The ability to work independently, develop their own research ideas, and collaborate within a research team is essential. Full proficiency in English is expected and additional language skills are desirable. 

What we offer

The position is based on a 3-year fixed-term contract with the option for a 1-year extension under certain conditions. It is a fully funded research position with no teaching obligations. The position can be part-time or full-time (currently 39 hours/week). Remuneration and social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD Bund), group 13 (entry level depending on prior experience), which amounts to a monthly minimum of around 4700€ euros gross.
