The Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Graz invites applications for the Kurt-David-Brühl-Guest Professorship for Jewish Studies for the summer semester 2026 (01.03.2026-30.06.2026).

The Kurt-David-Brühl Guest Professorship for Jewish Studies was initiated in the academic year 2001/02 with the purpose of teaching the foundations of Jewish History and Culture. The courses taught by the Kurt-David-Brühl Guest Professor are integral part of the Joint Master’s Programme „Jewish Studies – History of Jewish Cultures“ and are also offered in other curricula of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Graz. 
The purpose of the guest professorship is to expand the number of courses offered in the field of Jewish Studies at the University of Graz. The teaching load is 4 hours per week, which are to be taught as one lecture with practical and one seminar. One course has to be taught in English as part of the cooperation with the University of Bar Ilan. In addition, a workshop on a research focus of the guest professor is to be designed and conducted within the framework of the guest professorship. The Kurt-David-Brühl Guest Professorship for Jewish Studies is a position in the field of cultural studies and is thus open for applicants from a broad range of scholarly disciplines. A thematic focus is put on Jewish and non-Jewish relations/interactions from the 19th to the 21st century. 
The guest professor would be expected to be present in Graz during the semester.

Your Profile

  • PhD in a relevant academic discipline
  • outstanding scientific qualifications in research and teaching
  • Publications and teaching experience from the field of "Jewish Studies"
  • Pedagogical and didactic skills
  • International teaching experience and intercultural awareness
  • one-page outline of an idea for a workshop must be attached to the application documents
  • Applicants will have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching in any area of Jewish Studies and should submit sample syllabi of the courses they are prepared to teach
  • Interest in continuing collaborations with the Center for Jewish Studies (desirable)
  • Gender mainstreaming competence

  • Publications and teaching experience
  • The application documents must include concepts for the planned courses (1 lecture with exercise and 1 seminar). These should provide information on the content, methods and objectives of the respective course (max. 400 words per course)
  • A 1-page outline of an idea for a workshop must be enclosed with the application documents
  • Interest in further cooperation with the Centre for Jewish Studies (desirable)

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 69,060.60 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.
