Humanities Initiative Fellowships at CEU Budapest Institute for Advanced Study

Central European University and the university-based Institute for Advanced Study (IAS CEU) are pleased to announce a call for applications for their Humanities Initiative Fellowship, a joint research and teaching program for the academic year 2017/18.   

As part of CEU’s commitment to both the humanities and interdisciplinary teaching and research, the University launched this initiative in spring 2014. The Initiative provides incentives for new cross-departmental and interdisciplinary research and teaching activities in the humanities, and to infuse CEU social science programs with perspectives, approaches and accomplishments taken from the humanities. The Humanities Initiative Fellowship serves the purpose of opening up new fields of research or curricula not currently pursued at CEU.

Fellows are chosen by a rigorous selection process, which includes stages of pre-selection and peer reviews as well as a final decision made jointly by an independent, interdisciplinary and international Academic Advisory Board and the relevant teaching unit. The Institute is committed to the pursuit of cutting edge interdisciplinary scholarship and will seek innovative research proposals. Young scholars with demonstrable promise of excellence will be considered. A primary criterion for selection is the expectation that each fellow’s stay at the Institute will yield original and significant research results.

IAS CEU provides a stimulating environment in which the fellows can devote themselves to their research and share their work with peers through weekly seminars and other community programs. Fellows have access to all CEU facilities, including seminar and conference space, computer services, and library resources. They also benefit from CEU’s vibrant international atmosphere, its strong ties in the CEE region and its location in culturally rich Budapest. IAS CEU facilitates the fellows’ engagement with the CEU and the Hungarian scholarly community and beyond by encouraging collaborative projects, organizing joint public lectures, establishing student mentorship programs, and related activities.

Fellows work on their own research project as junior fellows at the Institute for Advanced Study in two of the semesters and teach a course at the university during one semester.

Eligibility

• PhD in hand by the starting of the fellowship, September 1, 2017 in any area of the humanities.
• A good track record of publications and a promising, innovative research project.
• Preference will be given to applications that can demonstrate a promising connection to one of CEU’s new or established research foci.
• No visiting, research or teaching position at CEU since September 2011.

Terms and conditions

The remuneration includes accommodation at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse for the entire 10 months and a net stipend/salary of 1,500 Euros per month (15,000 Euros total). We do not cover travel and utility costs in the Guesthouse, or the cost of health insurance in Budapest.

Fellows are expected to be in residence in Budapest and participate actively in the life of the IAS including its weekly seminar/luncheon as well as its social events scattered throughout the year.

In the Fall or Winter semesters in addition to participating in the life of the Institute, fellows are expected to teach a 12-week, 4-credit course or two 2-credit courses.  In the other two semesters fellows pursue their research without teaching obligations but will be expected to continue their cooperation with CEU students and faculty.
