The ERC Advanced grant, “The Sound of Empire in 20th-c. Colonial Cultures: Rethinking History through Music” (MUSICOL), seeks three postdoctoral researchers with an interest in urban musical practices during the modern French empire.

Francophone scholars from the fields of French colonial history; modern African, North African, or Southeast Asian History; the history of media (radio); musicology or historical ethnomusicology are encouraged to apply, especially those from North Africa, Francophone West Africa, Madagascar, and Vietnam.

Le prix scientifique franco-néerlandais Descartes-Huygens est décerné depuis 1995, pour la France, par le ministère des Affaires étrangères et européennes et le ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l'Innovation, et pour les Pays-Bas, par l'Académie royale des lettres et des sciences.

This call is open to researchers who have a doctoral degree or at least four years’ full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline.

The region welcomes candidates in all STEM disciplines.

Research projects that focus on Digital, Industrial, Environmental/Energy Transition, and Health – areas of great potential for development in the region – are particularly appreciated.

In 2005, the Franco-American Fulbright Commission, in partnership with the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the US Department of State, created the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair Award in commemoration of Alexis de Tocqueville’s 200th birthday and Senator J. William Fulbright’s 100th birthday.

For established scholars, recent doctoral-degree recipients, and appropriately qualified professionals outside of academia.

Conduct research at any university or research center in the Hauts-de-France region. Major cities include: Lille, Amiens, Lens, Valenciennes, Arras, Compiègne, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Beauvais, and Dunkirk.

The Hauts-de-France region welcomes candidates in all disciplines: the Hard and Social sciences as well as Humanities.

1 or 2 grants to be awarded

Applications are open to:

• Mid-career academics;
• Senior academics;
• Community college faculty.

Residency duration: 5 or 10 months

Possibilities : from September 2027 to June 2028 / from September 2027 to January 2028 / from February to June 2028.
